THE KNOWLEDGE CORNER
Which team, asks Opio John, has provided the highest number of goalkeepers for Uganda Cranes?

Much as its success in the league doesn't match that of SC Villa and neither does their Kakungulu Cup heroics reach those of Express FC, KCC has provided the biggest number of Cranes stoppers. From 1974 when KCC was promoted to elite division until recently when Uganda got professional goaltenders, the Lugogo side provided the most number of goalkeepers for The Cranes. These include George Mukasa, Ali Sendegeya, Hussein Matovu, Jamil Kasirye, Paul Ssali, John Tebusweke, Bright Dhaira, Sadiq Wassa and Hussein Ssali.

Strange facts:-
Oh Porter

At the height of the referee - bribing controversy in Ugandan football in the late 80s, British expatriate Wayne Porter volunteered to quell all the talk by joining the Referees Association with a view of officiating Super League matches. Porter said he was a Class Two British referee and had handled a few Big League Soccer matches.

Fans and FUFA embraced the selfless gesture and quickly offered him to handle the Express - Villa match. But the ageing Porter requested for more time to attain fitness.
In February 1991, he advised John Semanobe’s FUFA to bring forward the FIFA Cooper Test and warned that any referee who fails to make the mark should be scrapped off the FIFA list.

To the shock of the nation, Porter not only finished last, but he ended the session on clutches. Doubts were raised but in silence since everyone feared to question the Briton's credentials.

On his road to recovery, he officiated a couple of friendly matches until a game between the Diplomats and KCC reserves at Lugogo grounds. Porter got so exhausted and collapsed shortly before half time. He blamed his misfortune on the high temperatures. But word is that he was no ref.
